“The bitterness of poor quality remains a long time after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten”.   Benjamin Franklin

When you decide to install bifolding doors you have a choice of materials that are available.  Primarily the choice is between UPVC and aluminium.
Whilst UPVC ( unplasterised polyvinyl chloride) may be the cheaper option for a bifolding doors there are considerations which you need to take into account:-
The double or triple glazed panels within the doors are very heavy. A single panel can weigh over 22kg.
UPVC is a lightweight material which is often used in the building industry, however it will expand in the heat of the sun.  Whilst this may not cause too many issues with a smaller window, on a large bifolding door with heavy glass panels it may cause the door to be difficult to open and close on a warm day…. The very days when you want to make full use of the doors!   We have replaced UPVC bifolding doors with aluminium doors due to the home owner being dissatisfied with the functioning of the UPVC doors.     UPVC can move as much as 5mm per metre between a warm summer and a cold winter.  If you put UPVC expansion into a google search, you can see for yourself the problems that people experience.  One cure that is cited, is to pour cool water on the doors during the warm summer, before attempting to close them.   But really who wants to be doing this to get the door to shut!
It is also common for the doors to drop, again due to the weight of the panels, requiring adjustment of the hinges.
Obviously we are biased in favour of aluminium bi-folding doors. Find out more about our Bifolding doors.  We have bi-folding doors that were installed over 20 years ago in commercial applications which are still going strong and looking as good as the day they were installed.
With aluminiumm, you have a choice of profiles.  Both profiles are thinner than UPVC, so you get more glass….. more of your garden in your house.  Who wants to look at a frame!
The pictures show the frames on a set of French doors …The aluminium doors have been installed to replace the UPVC set, giving much larger panes of glass.

You have a choice of over 200 RAL colours… and you can have a different colour inside to outside.  So maybe decide on grey outside whilst white facing into the room.
Aluminium is a strong material hence the frames can be thinner than UPVC and it will not expand and contract, like a UPVC door, so you are unlikely to experience opening and closing problems due to the heat of the sun.
